Bakgrund och historia
Morgan silver dollar är en av de mest populära serierna av amerikanska mynt bland samlare. Myntet är uppkallat efter det är designer, George T. Morgan. De slogs i varje år från 1878 till 1904 och återupplivades igen 1921 för ett år.
Initialt skapades myntet för att gynna silvergruvbolagen när kongressen passerade Bland-Allison Act som effektivt dikterade antalet mynt som producerades varje månad.
Lagen uppblåste artificiellt priset på silver för att tillfredsställa gruvintressen. Hundratals miljoner av dessa mynt gick aldrig i omlopp och lagrades i tygpåsar som innehöll 1000 mynt. Skatteavdelningen lagrade sedan påsarna i regeringens valv.
År 1918 smältes totalt 270 232 722 mynt, men många mynt kvarstod inom regeringens valv i årtionden. Även om mynten producerat Proof-mynt om några år, är inte alla mynt som har en cameo-kontrast betraktas som bevismynt. Mynt som har en Deep Mirror Proof-Like (DMPL) finish gjordes för cirkulation.
